To commemorate the influence and contribution Professor Richard Shore made to wildlife ecology and ecotoxicology, each year we invite guest speakers to present their work and perspectives on the field.
This year we have the pleasure to welcome two of Richard’s collaborators and experts in their field to give perspectives on different aspects of wildlife ecotoxicology.
This year’s presenters will be:
- Lee Walker, UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. Lee will give a brief an update on the work of the vertebrate ecotoxicology team and the Predatory Bird
Monitoring Scheme (PBMS). - Jacky Chaplow UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. Jacky is a contaminant data scientist whose career began as a soil ecology fieldworker back in 1995. Nearly 20 years ago, she joined the PBMS team as Data Manager, where she developed the scheme’s website and social media presence. Over the years, Jacky has built extensive expertise in data management, relational databases, and publishing datasets and data papers. More recently, she has collaborated with digital researchers on projects that integrate and visualize PBMS data alongside other environmental datasets—covering pollution, meteorology, biodiversity, and land-use change—to create system-level insights and develop an environmental exposure hub.
Jacky will present ”Driving data integration and visualisation with Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme (PBMS) data at the core.” - Prof. Robbie McDonald, Chief Scientist for the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP). Robbie is an ecologist with research interests in conservation and environmental management, and on contentious environmental problems and conflicts, mostly among people about wildlife and other animals. Prior to taking the role of Chief Scientist at the OEP, he held the Chair in Natural Environment at the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute from 2011 to 2024. Robbie uses interdisciplinary approaches in his research into conservation practices and problems. His collaborative research has tackled diverse subjects including: wildlife conservation and management, invasive species, badgers and TB, environmental monitoring and data, game management, and companion animal ecology, particularly the ecology of cat predation and the ecology of dogs as a barrier to Guinea worm eradication.
Robbie will present “Scrutiny and accountability in environmental protection: The work of the OEP.”
