The Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme (PBMS) has recently launched a new initiative to expand and modernise its long-standing UK-wide efforts to track environmental health through birds of prey.
This project aims to develop a UK-wide network of trained PBMS volunteers supporting the collection of valuable biological samples. Central to the initiative is to increase regional engagement, higher-quality bird submissions and the long-term sustainability of the PBMS’s internationally significant tissue archive.
The PBMS team is pleased to announce that the Simon Gibson Charitable Trust is supporting these efforts in the South Wales region. The trust provides grants to registered charities, with a particular focus on supporting young people, the elderly, heritage and the natural environment.
Lee Walker, lead for the PBMS, comments: “This is very welcome news, and the support of the trust will enhance and accelerate our ability to establish a volunteer network in South Wales.”
“We plan to hold training events in the region in early 2027, and we’re looking forward to meeting volunteers. We’ll be advertising a call for volunteers through local conservation and environmental groups, and so we’d like to hear from groups whose members may be interested in participating in the volunteer network.”
